Lehana Thabane is a Professor of Biostatistics and Interim Chair of the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact; Associate member of the Departments of Pediatrics and Anesthesia, School of Nursing, and School of Rehabilitation Science, in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada). He is also the Director of Biostatistics at St Joseph’s Healthcare—Hamilton (Ontario, Canada); and senior Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute at Hamilton Health Sciences. He has won several teaching and supervision awards including the CE&B Excellence Award in Teaching for 2004-2006; the FHS Excellence in Graduate Supervision Award for 2012; and the McMaster President’s Excellence in Graduate Supervision Award for 2016. Dr Thabane has extensive experience as an educator and mentor. To-date he has mentored over 100 MSc, PhD and Postdoc trainees, including several junior faculty—many of who have become strong mentors and researchers in their own right. He is the clinical trials mentor for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and CIHR Drug Safety and Effectiveness Cross-disciplinary Training (DSECT) Program. He is Professor Extraordinaire in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, and holds visiting professorships at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and UNESP, Brazil.
Dr Thabane has co-authored over 650 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 700 abstracts presented at national and international meetings. His research interests include clinical trials, biostatistical research, evidence synthesis methods, outcomes research, and health services research in prevention, treatment, and management of chronic conditions in primary care. He is a member of several professional associations that include the International Statistical Institute (elected member), American Statistical Association, International Society of Clinical Biostatistics, and the Society for Clinical Trials.
